Comparison of Stuttering Event Judgment Made by Different Observers

Abstract
Background & Objectives: The aim of this study was compare the differences in recognition and judgment of stuttering events between three observer groups: people who stutter (PWS), normal people who do not stutter (PWNS), and speech and language pathologists with experience in stuttering diagnosis and treatment along with professional knowledge (ST).

Methods: The participants were 10 stutterers, 10 non-stutterers and 10 speech and language pathologists. Speech samples of 10 stutterers who also participated as observers were collected and presented for test. The samples were tested with ¡°Catch it¡± (Lee, 2010). Each group¡¯s stuttering event judgments were measured according to frequency and location agreement.

Results: ST showed the highest frequency number in judgment of stuttering, followed by PWS and then PWNS. When stuttering was severe, ST frequency reached its maximal value, and when stuttering severity was mild, PWS showed a higher frequency than the other groups. For the location agreement rate, ST showed the most accurate scores, followed by PWNS and then PWS. Additionally, the more severe was the stuttering, the greater was the accuracy in location agreement rate among all three groups.

Discussion & Conclusions: The above results suggest that the results of fluency disorder evaluation vary by observer group, and that frequency and agreement are related to stuttering severity. Accordingly, the stuttering event needs to be carefully defined, and an effective approach to evaluation and treatment is needed considering each group¡¯s differences in judgment.
